Chapter 19

Alifair had been assigned clothes washing, which suited her.

She’d been questioned over and over by Eriko early this morning. She could tell he was suspicious of her. He’d change his tactic to ask about her duties. Then, in the middle of her answering his first question, he’d interrupt to ask the last time she’d been in the downstairs cage area.

A question he’d already asked her once before.

With disruptive sleep since Bosse left, she fought exhaustion and yawned a lot to make sure he knew she was tired.

He hadn’t cared if she’d been bleeding to death.

The only thing that had helped her was having thought through everything Eriko or Krol might ask her. She’d given him the same answer both times, but she might have faltered if he’d kept up the interrogation for another two hours. There were moments when he’d sit quietly and say nothing.

A good tactic to make someone guilty start talking.

Not a tactic she’d fall for even when tired.

She’d spent her entire life keeping her mouth shut about her clan, her mother’s powers, and her own powers, feeble as they were. When he finally allowed her to go to bed, she’d had no time to sleep if she wanted to beat Hessie to the kitchen. She’d rushed to dress again, braided her hair once more that had come apart, hid the knife in her sleeve, and literally ran to the kitchen.

Hessie was still there first. She had her body angled toward the back of the kitchen and head down, cutting meat into sections while muttering to herself.

Alifair’s pulse went mad as she tiptoed over to the workstation where she’d taken the knife. She couldn’t just put it back in place and risk Hessie catching the movement. She found a place to slide it between two cabinets.

Hessie hadn’t looked up yet.

Hoping the woman remained fixated on her task, Alifair moved six steps back toward the doorway where she’d entered.

She cleared her throat and said, “Good morning.”

Hessie jerked and turned fast, grousing, “Why are you here now?”

Talk about looking guilty.

“Eriko just finished asking me about the wolf shifter that escaped. I saw no reason to try to sleep for an hour or two. What can I do?”

She’d clearly caught Hessie off guard.

The woman frowned at the floor as if it had insulted her somehow, then lifted her head. “Kylie will be here with wash crew soon. Go outside with them when she shows up. I will give one of those servants a day of easy work in kitchen.”

Easy work. Was she serious?

Alifair wanted to make a fist pump. Finally, she got a work assignment that might help her. She’d gladly follow Kylie around and find out as much as she could about that woman.

Slapping a smile on her face, Alifair said, “I will be happy to do whatever you need.” She stopped short of thanking the mean woman for the chance to study the outside structure of the castle.

Hessie shoved a hand in her direction, dismissing Alifair and her words.
